It’s spooky season at the Global Book Club! In this Halloween book club special, we’ll dive into the eerie and enchanting world of Coraline. Although initially marketed as a children’s book, Coraline has become a modern classic of dark literature whose rich themes and deep layers make it equally engaging and thought-provoking for adult readers. In this club, we’ll discuss examples of British English used in the writing and themes of bravery, growth, and the blurred line between reality and fantasy. We’ll also analyze Neil Gaiman’s unique storytelling style, the use of symbolism (such as the button eyes), and how suspense and an eerie atmosphere are created through language. In our last meeting, we will also discuss the differences between the book and the iconic movie. This club is perfect for English learners who enjoy mystery, suspense, and a story that makes you think.
