In this book club, we’ll explore Of Mice and Men, a classic work of American Literature that explores themes of friendship, hope, and the challenges faced by those with intellectual disabilities. We’ll follow the story of George and Lennie, two migrant workers and unlikely friends who share a dream of owning land during the Great Depression. This iconic novel is filled with regional phrases and slang from the 1930s, offering a chance to encounter authentic American English beyond standard usage. We’ll also analyze scenes from the film to practice understanding different regional accents. Alongside the practical language skills you will acquire from this club, we will also discuss the context of the Great Depression, a period that shaped American History. If you’re looking to sharpen your language skills while indulging in a classic work of literature this club is for you!

  • “Try to understand men, if you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and nearly always leads to love.”

John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men

  • “A guy needs somebody―to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick.”

John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men

  • “Just like heaven. Ever’body wants a little piece of lan’. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s just in their head. They’re all the time talkin’ about it, but it’s jus’ in their head.”

John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men
