Room is a powerful novel told from the perspective of Jack, a five-year-old boy who has spent his entire life in captivity in a single room with his mother. For Jack, “Room” is the only world he has ever known, filled with daily routines, bedtime stories, and his mother’s unwavering love. But for his mother, it is a prison that has held her captive for years. As Jack’s curiosity grows, so does the possibility of escape, forcing him to confront a reality far more complex than he ever imagined. Through his innocent and limited understanding of the world, readers experience a unique storytelling style that mirrors how young children think and speak. This book exposes readers to examples of non-standard English, including grammatical patterns and phrasing commonly used by children, that can help learners grow their understanding of real-world communication in English.
